Sahatra Club 1-0 Himalayan Sherpa Club

DIWAKAR BHANDARI - THT

Sahara Club of Pokhara advanced to the final of the third Magic Moments Simara Gold Cup defeating defending champions Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club 1-0 here today.

Buddha Lama scored the winner in the ninth minute to stun the holders. Buddha was lucky to score after his cross found the back of the nets with a deflection from defender Deepak Gurung. The Sherpas enjoyed a better ball possession but their forwards failed to convert chances that came their way.

Sahara goalkeeper Raju Yogi played a crucial part to keep their lead intact denying Sherpas’ on numerous occasions. He denied Rupesh KC, Pukar Gahatraj and Saroj Dahal in the dying moments of the match.

Sherpas, who finished second behind champions Nepal Police Club in the recently concluded National League, had fielded two Korean forwards and an African defender in the starting-XI. Vishan Gauchan of the winning side was adjudged man-of-the-match.

On their way to the last four, Sahara had defeated ‘A’ Division outfit Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club 2-0 before seeing off the ANFA Academy U-17 Team 1-0. Directly drawn in to the quarter-finals, the Himalayan Sherpa had edged Workers Martyrs Memorial Club 2-1 to set Sahara date.

Sahara coach Kiran Shrestha praised the performance of his players against a comparatively stronger opponent. “My boys’ played really well today. The result was just outcome of the hard work from them,” said Shrestha. Sherpas coach Nawal Gurung said they were unfortunate to lose the match despite dominating the entire game.

“We played better than Sahara but, luck was not in our favour today,” said Gurung. Sahara will take on the winners of Thursday’s match between Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club and Ranipokhari Corner Team in the final.
